PERRY'S VICTORY OVER THE BRITISH DURING THE BATTLE OF LAKE ERIE DURING THE WAR OF 1812) WAS OPENED JULY 4, 1892 AND BURNED TO THE GROUND AUG, 14 1919, IT WAS ONE OF THE LARGEST HOTELS IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME HAVING OVER 600 ROOMS AND ONE OF THE FIRST CO-ED POOLS IN THE U.S. THE VICTORY HOSTED MOST OF THE WELL TO DO FAMOUS PEOPLE OF THE DAY INCLUDING SEVERAL PRESIDENTS. More than 100 years ago, this state park was the site of the magnificent Hotel Victory, the largest summer resort hotel in the world at that time. The hotel was built by a Toledo developer and opened in 1892. With more than 800 guest rooms, the hotel was 600 feet long and 300 feet deep. A massive dining room seated 1,000 visitors, and it was a popular site for conventions. Like other hotels of this era, the Hotel Victory was its own community, and employed a manicurist, dentist, tailor, and others to service its guests. Before the popularity of the automobile and improvement of roads, hotels of this era hosted guests for extended periods of time, often several weeks. The Hotel Victory also had the first swimming pool in the nation that permitted both men and women to swim together. Ruins of this landmark pool are still visible at the state park. Although the hotel was impressive, it was never financially successful because of the cost of doing business on an island plus a constant string of managers. The hotel burned to the ground in 1919. Artifacts from the hotel can be seen at the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOUR PIB PORT CLINTON CATAWABA FRIEND THAT HAS EVERTHING OR IF NOTHING ELSE THIS SHOULD BE THE EBAY FIND OF THE MONTH IN THE GAZETTE TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS THERE ARE NO MAKERS MARKS ON THIS PIECE AND I AM UNSURE AS TO WHO MADE IT BUT I CAN NOT SAY FOR SURE IF IT IS TIFFIN FOSTORIA OR WESTMORELAND OR ANY OTHER MAKER it was open. Ironically, it was said to be having a successful year when it burned to the ground in 1919.
